Support available to those transitioning out of being a young carer

Growing up can be tough. As you start to move into being a young adult, there are lots of new pressures and decisions to be made. As a young carer, this time can be really difficult as some services may gradually stop as new services become available.

If you are already linked into your local young carers service and you are 18 or about to turn 19, now is a good time to talk to them about transitioning to an adult carer. Many young carer services will continue to support you beyond 18 to help with this transition.

If you are not already in contact with your local carer service, it's a really good idea to get in touch as your local service can provide you with advice, information and support on a whole range of things - you don’t have to do things alone. To find your local carers service you can go to Carers Trust Scotland  or Care Information Scotland. You can also contact Citizens Advice Scotland for advice and information on a whole host of issues including benefits, housing and health.

If you have a Young Carer Statement, it’s also important to know that all the recommendations and support that comes from this stays in place and is valid until you can get an Adult Carer Support Plan. This is very similar to a Young Carer Statement, where you will have a conversation about what your caring role looks like, what your goals are in life and how you can be better supported.

Every adult carer in Scotland has a right to an Adult Carer Support plan under the Carers (Scotland) Act. You can find out more about your rights by looking at the Carers' charter - gov.scot (www.gov.scot).

For more information about transition periods in your life, check out our information article.

You can keep accessing the Young Carers Package until you turn 19. We hope the Young Carers Package has been beneficial to you.
